Durban Salsa runs multi-level courses so that you can progress beyond the basics. Here's what you'll learn with us.

Introduction

Our introduction classes are one off lessons aimed at total beginners. We normally offer these at our promo nights and parties for first timers to get a taste of the basics. You'll learn...

* Musicality: The basic rhythms of Salsa Music and some of the different genres. Also the difference between Salsa, Bachatta and Merengue, which you're also bound to hear.

* Ethos: The down to earth, unpretentious Salsa spirit that makes it so accessible and fun.

* Etiquette: Asking others for a dance, dancing with someone more/less advanced than you.

* The basic steps: Mambo (forward & backward), Cucuracha (side to side) and Open Breaks (back rocks)

* The steps to a right-hand turn (Exhibela)

* Partnering up: The double-open hold, using the above mentioned steps and leading the right-hand turn (Exhibela)

Beginners Course

Our Beginners Course is run over 6 Weeks on Wednesday and Thursday nights. You can join both groups if you want to reinforce what you're learning, at no extra cost. It also offers you some flexibility if you can't make one of the nights.

On the Beginners Course you'll learn...

* The next step in steps: Combining the basic steps, Travelling, Cross-steps.

* More steps to more turns: Left-hand turns and Half-turns.

* Partner work: More holds, like: Single & double open holds, cross holds and closed holds. Plus more moves, like: Exhibela, Exhibela Doble, Dile Que No, Hammer locks, Enchufla, Enchufla Doble, She turns/he turns/she turns.

* La Rueda: An introduction to the basic steps of La Rueda: Guapea, Dame, Dame Otra and Buya!

We often recommend you do the Beginners course twice, to make sure you've totally grasped these important foundations. If you are ready, we'll recommend you progress to Improvers.

Intermediates

Workshops

To cater for our more Advanced dancers we regularly get Instructors from Johannesburg and Cape Town to run workshops for us. Whilst we make some workshops available to all levels, most are just for the Improvers and/or Intermediates. This way, you're not held up, you get the best value for your money and we make the most of their expertise.
